Portraits of Icons is an ongoing project by Nicholas A. Ferguson celebrating individuals who express themselves fully and expand the boundaries of what is possible.

From local characters to internationally recognised figures, each portrait reflects the presence, character, and individuality of those who shape the communities and creative life of the city Nicholas has called home for over two decades.

The Process

The series began with a small group of Londoners who have influenced Nicholas’s own experience of the city.

From these initial portraits, the project has grown into a wider exploration of the individuals who shape London’s cultural life.

Today, icons are nominated by members of the public — celebrating people whose creativity, character, or presence has made an impact on the communities around them.

Nicholas selects a photographic reference that resonates with him and paints the portrait in watercolour on paper, working with a strong intention to capture both the likeness and emotional presence of the individual.

Each portrait is accompanied by a quotation chosen by Nicholas that reflects the spirit of the sitter and the wider vision of the project.

Icons may be nominated by anyone who wishes to celebrate an individual whose presence or contribution deserves to be recognised.

The Series

The series continues to grow through encounters and nominations, gradually forming a portrait archive of the individuals who shape London’s cultural life.

If there is someone you believe embodies the spirit of an icon — whether widely recognised or quietly influential — you are welcome to share their name and story.
